Proverbs 5:8 (NLT)
“Run from her! Don’t go near the door of her house!”
The Strategy of the Sprint
The writer of Proverbs is dead serious here. While some challenges allow for management or negotiation, certain temptations require immediate, decisive action—a desperate sprint. The command is crystal clear: “No, RUN!” Don’t walk, don’t linger, and don’t “check it out.”
The dangerous lie of modern culture is the belief that we can dabble in sin, flirt with temptation, and quit whenever we feel like it. We assume we can handle the heat without getting burned. But the ancient writer demolishes this fallacy with a simple instruction: “Don’t even go near the door.” Let’s be honest: You can’t handle it. The tendency is to defy the warning to prove you’re stronger than those who fell before you. But ignoring Wisdom’s stop sign always carries a price tag you cannot afford to pay.
The Practice:
Closing the Entrance
1. Identify the “Door”
“Her door” is more than a specific person; it is a metaphor for the entrance to anything that leads you away from God’s best. It’s the door of your old vice, the door of your rebellious spirit, the door of your “loose-lipped” gossip, or the door of your undisciplined habits. RUN. If you don’t want to end up in the “house” of destruction, you have to stay off the “porch” of temptation.
2. Elevate the Voice of Wisdom
Temptation is loud; it speaks powerfully in your mind. To counter that noise, you must obtain a Voice of Wisdom. Actively seek mentors and leaders who will speak Truth directly into your moments of weakness. When the “door” starts calling your name, you need a Shepherd’s voice reminding you of the Path.
3. Participation is Not Required
True wisdom is the choice to learn a hard lesson from the heartache of others. You don’t have to touch the stove to know it’s hot. Humble yourself, sit down, and listen to the stories of those who ignored the warning. Some lessons do not require your personal participation to be understood—save yourself the pain and learn vicariously.
4. Cancel Your “Right to Negotiate”
We often “reserve the right” to question God’s Word—to listen only when it’s convenient. Today, cancel that reservation! Move to immediate, radical obedience. Stop trying to find a “middle ground” with a sin that wants to destroy you. Stop negotiating and just RUN.
Today’s Fresh Start Declaration:
“I am resigning from the ‘Negotiation Table’ today! I refuse to flirt with the doors that lead to my destruction. I am choosing the speed of the wise—when I see the trap, I will RUN. I am listening to my mentors, learning from the mistakes of others, and moving in radical obedience. I don’t need to see what’s inside the house; I’m staying on the Path!”
Distance is your best defense—don’t test your strength when you should be testing your speed. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
