Proverbs 15:2 (NLT)
“The wise person makes learning a joy; fools spout only foolishness.”
Savory, not Salty
It is one thing to possess the information someone needs to survive; it is another thing entirely to share it in a way they can receive it. Solomon tells us that a fool “spouts” foolishness—they might have the right facts, but they deliver them harshly, mockingly, or with a spirit of shame. Often, when we try to make others feel “dumb” or “slow,” we aren’t displaying our intelligence; we are projecting our own insecurities.
This is exactly why many people avoid the church. No one wants to be belittled or embarrassed because they don’t understand. Our greatest mentors aren’t the ones who make us feel small, but the ones who make wisdom feel attractive and inviting. As the “salt of the earth,” our job isn’t to be intentionally “salty” (bitter or abrasive); it is to be savory and flavorful. Salt is salty enough on its own; your job is to make the meal approachable.
The Practice
Making Wisdom Delectable
1. The Aesthetic of Instruction
We cannot make every hard truth “pretty,” but we should always strive to make it attractive. Your team, your family, and your children will thrive when learning is associated with joy rather than judgment. Ask yourself: Just because I had to learn this the hard way, does everyone else have to suffer the same trauma? Break the cycle of “hard-knock” teaching and become a joy-bringer.
2. Challenge Without Condemnation
Think of the teachers who pushed you the hardest. The best ones never lowered the standard; they simply convinced you that you were capable of reaching it. Choose to be the person who motivates others to “step up” rather than “shut down.” Your encouragement is the fuel that helps others climb the mountain of maturity.
3. Reroute Your Frustration
When those you lead aren’t “getting it,” the natural response is frustration. A fresh start requires you to reroute that energy. Instead of being frustrated at their lack of knowledge, put that energy into making the knowledge more attainable. If the student isn’t learning, investigate the presentation.
Today’s Declaration
“I will not weaponize the truth to make others feel small. I choose to be a savory witness, making the pursuit of wisdom a joy for those around me. I reject the spirit of mockery and insecurity, and I commit to being an encouraging bridge to understanding for my family, my team, and my community.”
Truth is the meal, but your attitude is the seasoning. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
