Proverbs 17:2 (NLT)
“A wise servant will rule over a master’s shameful son and will share the inheritance of the master’s children.”
Wisdom Over Pedigree
A wise servant is simply one who gives ear to wisdom. They heed counsel. In the Kingdom, “to hear” is synonymous with “to obey.” This proverb reveals a startling truth: Wisdom can bypass bloodlines. A servant who listens will eventually take the place of a “shameful” heir—someone who has the title but lacks the character.
A shameful person might mean to do the right thing, but they entertain ungodly means of accomplishing it. Consider Rehoboam (1 Kings 12). He was the rightful heir to the throne, but he ignored the wisdom of the elders and chose to listen to his foolish, ignorant friends. That one “stiff-necked” decision cost him his crown and his kingdom. His wiser contemporary, Jeroboam, was promoted into the space Rehoboam vacated. God will displace the entitled to promote the entreatable.
The Practice
Escaping the Box
1. The Choice to Deny Self
You cannot possibly know everything, nor can you properly apply what you do know all the time. You must learn to heed Wisdom. Proverbs 3:5 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart, but the “fine print” says we must not lean on our own understanding. Trusting God requires a deliberate choice to deny “Self.” Until you silence the voice of your own ego, you will never truly hear the voice of the Sovereign Lord.
2. Break the Box!
Your circumstances, your current position, and your past do not define you. However, to break out of your box, you must stop putting God in one. We naturally try to subject God to our limited comprehension—that’s a box. We limit Him to our perceptions—that’s a box.
Yahuah Elohiym cannot be contained by your definitions. He made you for “Greater,” so stop settling for “Lesser.” Man-made constructs and social labels only define you if you give them permission. Break the box! Choose to believe God over man, over money, over mistakes, and even over what you thought you understood.
Today’s Declaration
“I am not defined by my past or my current position; I am defined by my obedience to Wisdom. I refuse to be a ‘shameful heir’ who ignores godly counsel. I break every box of limited thinking and I surrender my ‘right to be right’ so that God can promote me into His perfect purpose.”
If you stay teachable, God will make you reachable for a promotion. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
