Proverbs 15:4 (NLT)
“Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”

The Myth of “Harmless” Words

It is often said that sticks and stones may break bones, but words can never hurt. That is a lie. In fact, words are some of the most powerful weapons on the planet. When we want to hurt someone, we know exactly what to say—and sometimes, the most hurtful “word” we give is the silence of shutting down altogether.
In your tongue resides both life and death (Proverbs 18:21). A gentle, patient, and considerate word is a source of health; it uplifts the weary and motivates the stuck. But a cruel, uncensored, or deceitful word is a quiet killer. Remember, it was mere words that enticed Eve to sin, and those same venom-laced words continue to crush spirits in our families and friendships today. It is easy to say something stupid, but it is impossible to take it back.

The Practice:

Verbal Sobriety

God gave us the power of speech, and He expects us to use it according to His prescription. To move from “crushing” to “healing,” we must change our verbal habits:
1. The Prayer Prefix
Never let a word leave your mouth that hasn’t passed through the filter of prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to “gatekeep” your lips. If it doesn’t bring life, don’t let it out.
2. Avoid Emotional “Heat”
Never speak in the height of an emotional storm—whether that emotion is anger or even extreme excitement. High emotions usually lead to low-quality communication. If the “temperature” is rising, wait for the “cool down” before you release your thoughts.
3. Weigh the Outcomes
Before you speak, perform a quick “outcome audit.” Ask yourself: Will these words build a bridge or a wall? Once words are released, they are like seeds; you are responsible for the harvest they produce.
4. Put Your Tongue on a D.I.E.T.
It’s time for some spiritual weight loss. Commit to D.I.E.T.—Don’t Initiate Evil Talk. Refuse to be the source of gossip, sarcasm, or “low-blow” quips. If it isn’t edifying, it’s “junk food” for the spirit.
5. Look for the Good
The world is already saturated with judgmental, mean-spirited people. Don’t add to the noise. Make it your mission to find the good in a person or situation and speak it out loud. Practice kindness until it becomes your new natural.

Today’s Declaration:

“I am placing my tongue on a D.I.E.T. today. I refuse to initiate evil talk or release words that crush the spirits of others. I choose to be a speaker of life, a messenger of health, and a fountain of encouragement. I will pray before I speak, and I will use my words to build the Kingdom, one gentle sentence at a time.”

Your words are the seeds of your future; make sure you’re planting flowers, not weeds. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
