Proverbs 6:5 (NLT)
“Save yourself like a deer escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.”
The Co-Signer’s Snare
Solomon uses incredibly intense imagery here. He doesn’t suggest you “politely exit” an agreement; he tells you to run as if your life depends on it. The context here is co-signing—putting your name down as collateral for someone who couldn’t qualify on their own. When you co-sign, you aren’t just “helping a friend”; you are voluntarily stepping into a trap. If they default, the lender isn’t looking for them—they are coming for you.
Wisdom demands that we protect our names and our peace. You cannot build a Kingdom future while you are legally bound to someone else’s past-due mistakes.
The Practice
Financial Sovereignty
1. The Power of “No”
The best way to handle a snare is to never step in it. Whether it is a close friend or a loved one, do not co-sign. When you sign that line, you are no longer in control of your own credit or reputation—you are at the mercy of your friend’s discipline and the lender’s discretion. A “No” today protects the relationship tomorrow.
2. The Great Escape
If you have already signed, do not let another sunset pass without trying to get out. Solomon says to “beg and plead”—humble yourself and do whatever it takes to get your name off that deal. Treat it like a life-or-death situation. Like a bird evading a net, you must act with urgency. Even if it causes temporary friction in the relationship, your financial freedom is worth the cost
3. Consult the Higher Vantage Point
Never make a critical financial decision in a vacuum. What seems like a “good deed” from your vantage point might be a “financial disaster” from a wiser perspective. Don’t let pride or emotion stop you from seeking godly counsel. A second opinion from a person of wisdom can save you years of regret.
Today’s Declaration
“I will not entangle my future in the snares of unwise agreements. I value my financial peace and my God-given sovereignty. If I am entangled, I will seek a way out with urgency. I choose to be a steward of my own name and a seeker of godly counsel.”
Your signature is your bond; don’t give it away lightly. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
