Proverbs 18:4 (NLT)
“A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.”
Spiritual Irrigation
In a world parched by useless, negative talk, we are called to be a source of life-giving water. There is something transformative about the right person saying the right thing at the right time! It is invaluable. Words spoken out of divine Wisdom are fresh and refreshing—they don’t just fill space; they fill spirits.
While the fool “airs” his unhelpful and unwise ideas—polluting the atmosphere with his opinions—a wise person’s words add benefit, support, and encouragement. A single wise word can be the deciding factor in a tough, complicated entanglement. Why? Because wise words are simply God’s words, and as we see in Matthew 4:4, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Father. Your words should be the “bubbling brook” that brings life back to a dead situation.
The Practice:
Mastering the Weapon of Speech
1. The Seasonal Fruit Audit
Consider the fruit of your speech today. Ask yourself: What could I say that would bring actual value in this specific season? Sometimes, the most wise and “life-giving” thing you can do is say nothing at all. The true battlefield is our minds, and our words are the primary weapons. Therefore, we must speak with intentionality, not impunity. Never use your “weapon” to hit the wrong target.
2. The Mirror Test
Before you speak into someone else’s life, weigh the difference. Ask: What would I need to hear if I were in their shoes? There is a massive gap between what you want to say (your emotions) and what God directs you to say (His Wisdom). Only the “prayed-up” believer knows the difference. Being “prayed-up” means you have spent consistent time seeking God in His Word until His voice becomes your vocabulary.
3. The Heart Repository
As Psalm 119:11 declares, we must hide the Word in our hearts to keep from sinning. If you don’t store the “water” of the Word in your heart during the quiet times, you won’t have anything to pour out during the dry times. Your speech is an overflow of your “heart-storage.” If you want to speak like a bubbling brook, you have to be filled by the Source.
Today’s Declaration:
“I am closing the tap on negative, useless talk. I choose to be a ‘bubbling brook’ of Wisdom today, bringing life-giving water to every dry situation I encounter. I am checking my heart-storage and filling it with the Word so that my overflow is refreshment, not pollution. I will speak with intentionality and act with grace!”
Your words are either a desert wind or a mountain stream—choose to refresh! Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
