Proverbs 13:6 (NLT)
“Godliness helps people all through life, while the evil are destroyed by their wickedness.”
The Independence Trap
From the moment of birth, we are dependent beings. As we age, the world conditions us to chase “total independence,” but that was never the Biblical model. God’s intent was never for man to become independent of Him, but rather to learn interdependence. We are called to lean on Him while pulling together with one another.
Our homes are suffering today because we have allowed the lie of isolation to invade our residences. We teach our children to “get out and do you,” but the historical and Biblical model was always for the youth to become sufficient so they could aid, add to, and advance the family. Family is the priority, not an ancillary idea. The “every man for himself” programming is a secular killer that destroys the very thing God holds precious: community. When a young adult is allowed to run without a firm tether to wisdom, they don’t become “successful”—they become a weapon of mass destruction.
The Practice:
The Art of Pulling Together
1. The Harambee Factor
1 Timothy 6:6 says godliness with contentment is great gain. The word “contentment” means to hold steady, and in Swahili, we call this Harambee—the act of all pulling together. We find our greatest success and protection when we trust God and pull in the same direction as a family and a church. Independence is a leak; Harambee is a floodgate of blessing.
2. Kill the “Selfish Jerk” Impulse
Let’s be blunt: To resist selfish impulses, you have to stop being a jerk. We are family, yet the enemy’s primary goal is to keep us acting like self-centered individuals who prioritize our own “vibe” over the group’s victory. The truth is, I am often my own worst problem. Today, choose to kill the “Me” to save the “We.”
3. Lean on the Infallible
God never fails, so godliness will never fail you. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, His divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life (2 Peter 1:3). You don’t have to find the strength to be godly on your own; you just have to receive the glory and goodness He has already called you into.
4. Uproot the Secret Killers
Evil is a consistent killer. It must be uprooted and uncovered wherever it exists—in our attitudes, our habits, or our hidden agendas—or it will destroy everything in its path. Don’t tolerate “a little bit” of wickedness; it is a fire that won’t stop until the house is gone.
Today’s Declaration:
“I am resigning from the ‘Spirit of Independence’ today! I refuse to buy into the lie of isolation or the ‘Me-First’ mentality. I am choosing the Harambee life—pulling together with my family, my church, and my God. I am killing my selfish impulses, tethering myself to Wisdom, and trusting that godliness will help me all through my life. I am not alone; I am aligned!”
Isolation is an exit; Interdependence is an entrance to glory. Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
