The Oxygen of the Honest

Proverbs 14:5 (NLT)
“A truthful witness does not lie; a false witness breathes lies.”

The Fluency of the False

There is a chilling emphasis in this verse on the ease of the lie. For the truthful witness—a person of high moral character and unshakeable integrity—a lie is a foreign object. It doesn’t fit in their mouth. But for the false witness, lying is as natural as respiration. They don’t have to “think” of a lie; they “breathe” it. They can fabricate stories instantly, fluently, and without a hint of hesitation.
Somewhere along the way, we let the world convince us that being a Christian means being soft, passive, or a glutton for punishment. But Jesus was never soft! Much of our suffering is actually self-sabotage because we are too quick to trust without validation. We must stop being impressed by “smiles” and start being moved by “Spirit.” The artist BBD said it this way, “Never trust a big butt and a smile.”  As Joshua learned the hard way in Joshua 9, even when things look good on the surface, they can be a setup for a setback if you don’t check the source.

The Practice:

Building Your Spiritual Radar

1. The Word as a Filter
Guard yourself against becoming a false witness by hiding, storing, and consistently reviewing the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” When your heart is full of Truth, your lungs won’t have room for the “oxygen” of a lie.
2. Prayer in the Cockpit
Take everything before the Lord. Believers pray first, not last. Make this your practice before every decision, every dining experience, every date, and every deed. Prayer brings the Holy Spirit into the “cockpit” of your life, giving Him the controls before you fly into a storm of deception.
3. Seek the Prophet’s Counsel
Seek biblical counsel on critical decisions. In the days of old, even kings didn’t move without the man of God. Saul lost his kingdom because he decided to act in lieu of the prophet’s counsel. Don’t let your “independence” become your “undoing.”
4. “Good” is the Enemy of “Right”
Resist the pressure to make a “good” choice over the RIGHT choice. Often, a “good” opportunity is just a distraction sitting right in front of the “Right” door God has for you. The right choice is the one God sent. No matter how shiny the “good” one looks, wait a moment. Let God show up; He always does for those who wait on Him.

Today’s Declaration:

“I am resigning from the school of ‘Soft Christianity.’ I refuse to be naïve or easily deceived by the ‘breathing lies’ of the world. I am putting the Holy Spirit in the cockpit of my day, seeking Godly counsel before I move, and waiting for the ‘Right’ choice over the ‘Good’ one. I am sharp, I am shrewd, and I am standing on the Truth!”

Don’t trust the ‘smile’ until you’ve tested the ‘spirit.’ Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
