Proverbs 31:6 (NLT)
“Liquor is for the dying, and wine for those in deep depression.”
The Sedation of the Sovereign
This final chapter of Proverbs is a strategic discourse delivered to a young king by his mother. She is schooling him on the critical do’s and don’ts of royalty, and right at the top of the list of liabilities are liquor, beer, and wine. She makes it clear that intoxicating substances are for the dying and the deeply depressed. Historically, this references the use of alcohol as a primitive medical pain-deadener for those on their deathbeds, or as a desperate mental escape for those seeking to drown their sorrow and emotional agony.
Hear this clearly: a coping mechanism for the dying will never suffice for a living king, or for God’s chosen, redeemed leaders. Practically, you must have your full wits about you to execute right judgment and make high-level decisions. That is an impossibility when your mind is under the toxic influence of drugs, alcohol, or worldly escapes. If you need a drink to have a “good time,” if you need a substance to calm your nerves, or if you need to “light up” just to relax and de-stress—then Houston, we have a massive spiritual problem.
The Competing Altar
When substances or vices slide into a position of “need” or psychological dependence, they are no longer just drinks or habits—they have become idols. They are actively competing with the one and only true and living God for the sacred center of your life. That is a guaranteed losing position. None of those chemical compounds can ever manufacture true peace, true structural relief, or divine clarity of thought. The world can only offer cheap, counterfeit imitations of the real thing.
Jesus—YaHusha—is our absolute peace, our Shalom. He declares in John 14:27: “…and the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives…” The world’s peace depends on a bottle, a prescription, or an escape; His Shalom depends on His presence. Furthermore, warfare requires you to be fully alert to engage. Right now, families are under the worst demonic attack we have ever faced as a people, yet too many are walking through life in a completely drunken stupor. God never intended for His chosen people to just chase a temporary “feel good” high. He gave us Joy—and Kingdom Joy supersedes all external circumstances and human understanding!
The Practice:
High-Alert Alignment
1. Evict the Counterfeit Peace
Audit your dependencies today. Identify the cheap imitations you have been using to sedate your anxiety or escape your pressures. Repent for giving a bottle, a habit, or a vice the sacred place that belongs to God alone. Evict the counterfeit and demand the real Shalom of YaHusha.
2. Clear the Mind for the Assignment
Decide that your calling is too heavy for your mind to be foggy. A leader cannot manage a legacy while under the influence of an escape. Protect your wits, lock down your focus, and keep your mind completely sober so you can hear the strategic whispers of the Holy Spirit.
3. Sound the Alarm in the House
Stop going along to get along while the enemy wreaks havoc on your family and your divine purpose. Wake up! See the alarm, recognize the spiritual assault on your heritage, and prepare yourself to take flat-footed, aggressive action. You are a king—start acting like the watchman on the wall.
Today’s Declaration:
“I am resigning from the ‘Drunken Stupor’ of this culture today! I refuse to sedate my spirit or drown my pressures in the cheap, counterfeit escapes of the world. YaHusha is my Shalom, and His Joy is my strength! I reclaim my wits, I lock down my focus, and I choose total, clear-minded sobriety. My family will not be ambushed, my purpose will not be compromised, and I am standing fully alert to rule my day!”
You can’t fight a real devil with a fake peace—sober up and take your territory! Today is a great day to make a Fresh Start!
God bless,
